What you’re building in this step

The actual playing surface: foam under suited speed cloth on the center insert, so cards slide and pick up the way they should.

Glue the foam

Spray-adhere foam to the center field with 3M Super 77 (or similar). Work outside or with serious ventilation—this adhesive fumes heavily. Spray both the wood and the foam, join them, then trim to the edge after the bond sets.

Foam thickness: 3/8“ under the cloth often feels too tall. 1/4“ closed-cell foam or neoprene gives a better card pickup and a lower profile.

Cut foam with a sharp utility knife. Imperfections in the foam show through the cloth, so take your time on the trim.

Stretch the speed cloth

Leave roughly 4 inches of overhang. Square the suit pattern to the table. Pull tight and staple about every inch under the edge, then trim the excess with a sharp blade.

Tip: Start stapling at the center of each long side, then work toward the corners so you don’t trap a diagonal wrinkle.
